Vulnerabilities

What are Vulnerabilities?

Many threats begin with a simple software vulnerability. Vulnerabilities are flaws or weaknesses found in software applications, operating systems, and web pages and applications that compromise the security of your PC. New vulnerabilities are reported weekly in all sorts of applications, from Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mac OS to Adobe Flash Player and Yahoo! widgets.

When cybercriminals exploit vulnerabilities, you could run malicious code just by accessing a web page with a flawed browser or opening a
file with the affected application. Software vendors address these flaws by releasing patches. It is up to users to keep their PC installations permanently up-to-date so that they are not vulnerable to these attacks.

Why should you care?

Vulnerabilities can compromise your PC security, putting your personal identity and information at risk.

How to Protect Yourself

Keep your PC current with the latest software updates and patches.
  • Apply the latest security updates and patches to your software programs and operating systems and enable automatic updates where possible. Since cybercriminals typically take advantage of flaws in the software to plant malware on your PC, keeping your software current will minimize your exposure to vulnerabilities.

Protect your PC with security software.
  • Install an Internet security suite like Trend Micro™ Internet Security that includes spam filtering and blocking as well as anti-malware and anti-spyware capabilities. Keep security software up-to-date.
  • Use a free tool, such as RUBotted or Web Protection Add-On, which can alert you to bot infiltration and help protect you from web threats.
Protect yourself and your PC
  • Beware of web pages requiring software installation. Scan programs before executing. Always read the end user license agreement and cancel if you notice other programs being downloaded in conjunction with the desired program.
